Podcast: SPACE IN 60 Episode: JUAN DE DALMAU Today’s hosts, Chad Baker, Clint Graumann and Andrew Pylypchuk, invite you to join us for today’s episode of the SPACE IN 60 podcast. Together, they bring you into the world of the new space industry! Our guest today is one of the most well-connected people in the space industry, Juan De Dalmau. To kick off the conversation, Juan highlights the International Space University, at which he enrolled in 1989 with a joint scholarship. When he attended their first space program in France that summer, he discovered what he calls “the first startup university”. The idea of the university was for the future leaders of humanity in space to come together in order to increase the chances of peaceful space exploration. The summer school changed Juan’s life and career trajectory in many ways. In the early years of the university, Juan was invited on as a guest lecturer before he was asked to run the summer sessions in 6 different countries. In 2013 after moving to several new positions, he was selected as the president of the university. Juan has witnessed huge evolution during his time in the space industry. The Apollo Program of the 70s marked a shift towards a phase of commercial space. Today, Juan believes we are in phase 3, which he deems “new space”. We see a paradigm shift in which private companies operate independently from government funding and restrictions, all while promoting more affordable access to space. Growing up in a multicultural environment, Juan’s dream was to work for an international organization at which he could connect with people from all over the world. Juan speaks 7 languages and believes learning different languages gives one a huge competitive advantage in the job market. Then, the guys discuss Australia in relation to the new space industry. The country boasts a respected yearly budget with the National Space Agency, acceleration of many new space programs and an influx of innovative space-related companies. As the episode wraps up, Juan is asked to share what he is most excited for in the future of the space industry. For him, what’s most exciting is that people on the street are beginning to realize that space can help us solve many of our earth’s challenges. Many new startups share the goal of doing something good for humanity all while making progress in space. Finally, Juan offers a closing piece of advice for listeners.
