RICHARD & DANIEL MCCAMMON | C6 Launch Systems

A father and son working to be the first commercial company from Canada to reach orbit building their very own launch vehicles, Richard and Daniel McCammon tell us about the journey of building a business from scratch in the launch industry, bootstrapping the first stages of their business and planning big things for the second stage. At a time when launch companies are breaking records on the number of satellites launched at one time, Richard and Daniel are focused on a bespoke model of getting smaller payloads to orbit, on time, and on target.
Podcast: SPACE IN 60 Episode: Richard & Daniel McCammon, C6 Launch Systems Welcome to this episode of the SPACE IN 60 podcast, hosted by Clint Graumann (the “Monotone Monster”, Andrew Pylypchuk ("Thruster”) and Chad Baker ("Booster")! Andrew is over the moon to introduce listeners to two leaders within the Canadian arm of the NewSpace movement. These guests, C6 Launch executives Richard and Daniel McCammon, are here to give the lowdown on how they’re building rockets, where they’re launching from, and what will be their first suborbital vehicle. Even more remarkable than Daniel and Richard’s generosity in speaking with Americans after the Stanley Cup recently moved to Florida is the work of C6 Launch. The company is focused on providing launch services tailored to customer needs, and is at the forefront of a burgeoning movement in Canada into the space industry. Richard is the company President, and Daniel its VP of Engineering; the company has a global reach, which has been shaped by the opportunities and disadvantages of different parts of the globe (such as Canada’s lack of launch capabilities). Launch is, Richard and Daniel believe, one of the most exciting things happening in the space field right now. Growing demand has met with insufficient rides into space, prompting growth in the launch business. In fact, the founders of C6 Launch, Daniel and two of his friends, developed the company because they saw both the gap in the space industry represented by launch and their own ability to step into the gap. One significant challenge to their work is international regulations, particularly those of the US. The US is closed off for a lot of exports, and has legislation (such as ITAR) in place restricting who can work on US tech for space applications. The realities of international regulations have added a layer of challenge to the work of C6 Launch, but have also shaped the company to be creative and adaptable. And as the New Space movement is growing, the trend is away from superpowers being at the center of space innovation and toward democratization and globalization of the industry. Daniel and Richard share that their company buys many products rather than making them. This reduces time to market, lowers both risk and capital needed for research and development, and allows the company to produce an overall solid end-product. C6 Launch has a timeline of milestones mapped out, is aided by such things as additive manufacturing and complex design software, and is currently working on a suborbital vehicle. Richard and Daniel are still on the lookout for their ideal partner, and their hope is alive to put the first Canadian vehicle into space! Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe!
