CRAIG CLARK | Leader of the Scottish NewSpace Movement

Craig Clark, Founder of AAC Clyde Space and current Chair of Space Scotland joins us today to tell us about his leadership of the NewSpace movement in Scotland. From being one of the first to develop cube sats, to putting Scotland on the map for space, Craig is making his dent in the world by growing the Scottish space sector, and making it well-known and attractive for space companies to come to Scotland for space.
Podcast: SPACE IN 60 Episode: Craig Clark Welcome to the SPACE IN 60 podcast Episode 14, where hosts Clint Graumann, and Andrew Pylypchuk bring you into the world of the NewSpace industry! Today, Clint and Andrew welcome guest Craig Clark of Space Scotland and Founder of AAC Clyde Space Ltd, Glasgow's first space company. Before diving into today's discussion with Craig, Andrew highlights the space industry’s biggest news of the day: SpaceX’s leaky toilet. In other exciting news, NASA released the first images off of Landsat 9. With that said, let’s get Craig on the line! As the conversation gets underway, Craig offers an update on his work. After founding Clyde Space around 17 years ago, he is now the Chair of Space Scotland. Space Scotland is a voluntary group of people involved in the space sector who come together once every quarter to promote Scotland’s space industry. Much like the space sector as a whole, the organization has grown rapidly over recent years. Both Clint and Andrew attest to Scotland’s growing presence in the space industry worldwide. Craig has gone from starting Clyde Space 17 years ago to effectively being the leader of the new space movement in Scotland. Listen as he recounts his journey in the industry from the beginning. Craig began working for Surrey Satellite Technology, where he remained for 11 years, after graduating university in 1994. He learned lots about his trade, satellites and working for a small business with clever, motivated people. When his wife wanted to return to Scotland, Craig had trouble finding a position in the space industry, which was almost non-existent in the country at that time. At the end of the day, they decided to start their own company. He reveals that lots of the things happening in the late 90’s and early 2000’s were instrumental in developing the market today. Next, Craig reveals the most exciting thing happening in NewSpace in Scotland today. Many growing companies in Scotland are small-medium enterprises, market-led and self-sufficient, and are offering brilliant new ideas. Craig hopes that he can use his own experience to guide new companies in the right direction. Finally, he shares the one thing he wants to bring to Scottish space in the coming years. In the industry today, people are really advocating for each other and working together on projects. The episode ends with Clint and Andrew’s final thoughts, and reflecting on Craig’s many accomplishments in NewSpace and attention to quality and customer service.
