Episode: Getting into the Passing Lane with Stephanie Roldan

Welcome to the Construction DEI Talks podcast, where we dive into diversity, equity, and inclusion as they relate to the construction industry. Co-hosts Jorge Quezada, Vice President of Inclusive Diversity at Granite Construction, Stephanie Roldan and Te'Osha Baker-Bunch of Rosendin, and Aby Combs, Inclusive Diversity Business Partner at Granite Construction, bring new conversations with subject matter experts and discuss how we can make our industry better and stronger. Today’s episode looks a little bit different as we listen to a live recording of Stephanie’s recent speaking opportunity.

Stephanie was recently invited during the Women in Construction Month this past March to join the API group and their network of women to speak about career development. To begin the discussion, Stephanie shares that she joined the construction industry in 1999 as an enterprise in the field focusing on becoming a journeyman someday. She took a position as a foreman, which was the highest position she had held on the field side before joining the office side of the industry. In the last year, Stephanie accepted her current role as Vice President of Learning and Development at Rosendin. She now spends most of her time coaching and mentoring others, helping people move up in their careers and navigate the potential that a lateral move would align better with their skills and talents. She also does outreach work within the community.

This year, Rosendin is most proud of their success in implementing  camps available in their offices between the ages of 12-15. With these free camps, they hope to introduce kids to the construction industry. Stephanie explains that the company is built from a really great core group of people who value respect and the ability to bring new ideas forward. Then, the conversation shifts as Stephanie shares the other activities and pursuits she has experienced which have continued her career in learning. She has found that a great way to grow leadership is within company sponsored committees. Additionally, finding an organic relationship in which a person is willing to mentor and sponsor you is what really drives a positive mentorship. Then, she offers her best advice for employees who don’t feel their work is being noticed. One of the best things you can do for yourself and your career is find yourself a mentor who really advocates for you. These people don’t have to be in your company or even in your industry, but can come from places like our neighborhood, church, our childrens’ school, etc. IDPs (individual design plans) are always a good thing to have, but don’t be afraid to change your plans if something isn’t working. Growth can look very different for individual employees. Before wrapping up, Stephanie shares the most insightful moments of the conversation.
