This series will discuss endocrine issues, especially related to pregnant women, and ways in which risks can be identified and mitigated. To begin, a brief history of endocrinology is discussed. Dr. Ashwini Gore explains common endocrine disorders. Polycystic ovary syndrome, commonly known as PCOS, is the most common endocrine disorder in adolescent and childbearing-aged females. A key feature of PCOS is irregular period cycles, meaning a woman has eight or fewer periods in a year. Other features include hyperandrogenism and polycystic ovaries. There are four different phenotypes of polycystic ovary syndrome. This means that PCOS can be displayed differently in women. Dr. Ashwini Gore gives a detailed explanation of these phenotypes. She also explains the treatment. PCOS can largely be managed by lifestyle modifications. Some of these modifications include healthy eating and increased exercise. There are a variety of medications that are used for treatment as well. It is important that a woman's primary doctor be educated in recognizing PCOS and that the gynecologist and endocrinologist work together to provide the best treatment plan. #pcos #polycysticovarysyndrome #endocrinology #endocrinedisorders #hormones #hyperandrogenism #polycysticovaries #noperiods
