No currently used #anestheticagents have been shown to have any #birthdefects effects in humans when using standard concentrations at any age of pregnancy, and no known effect on fetal brain
A pregnant woman should never be #deniedmedicallynecessarysurgey or have that surgery delayed regardless of her #stage of pregnancy
Elective that is planned, #non-emergencysurgery should however be postponed until after delivery.
There is a chance of #pretermdelivery with surgery in pregnancy so #steroids should be given to help the baby’s lungs mature
The pregnant mother should be monitored for #pretermlabor after surgery
We monitor the baby’s heart rate to help in #positioningthepregnantmotherforsurgey in pregnancy and in managing her heart rate and respiration during surgery, and in deciding when to #deliverthebaby.
The women should take care not to form #clotsintheirlegs
The surgery should be done at a hospital with #neonatalservices.
An obgyn who can #interpretfetalheartrate patterns and perform #cesareansection should be readily available.
When possible, the woman has provided #informedconsent for an #emergencycesarean delivery if necessary
Finally every situation needs a #teamapproach with anesthesia and obgyn doctors and surgeons, #NICUspecialists and nurses, for the best safety of the mother and baby
