No Periods Yet Not Pregnant:Hormones & Ghungroos- summarized

Welcome back to Cocoa Pods, the podcast for the Birth Center For Natural Deliveries Foundation. This podcast focuses on women’s health with an emphasis on maternal morbidity and maternal mortality. Host, Dr. Bola Sogade gives an overview of the past series, No Periods Yet Not Pregnant. In the past three episodes Dr. Ashwini Gore, an endocrinologist practicing in Macon, Ga, joined the podcast to discuss an array of health issues associated with endocrinology. The series began with a history of endocrine conditions and an explanation of endocrinology, the field of medicine that deals with endocrine glands and hormones. The first episode speaks about the most common endocrine disorder in young women, polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS. This led to the conversation about the relationship between the endocrine system and the female reproductive system. The two doctors also discussed endocrine disorders in pregnant women and the effects they can have on both mother and child if not controlled. The thyroid gland serves important purposes, and pregnant women need 50% more thyroid hormone. The conditions of an over and under-active thyroid gland were discussed in this series. We also learned that 346 million people worldwide have diabetes. This is a growing health issue. By 2023, it is expected that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death. Dr. Sogade and Dr. Gore discuss the risks associated with diabetes specifically in pregnant women and their children. They also speak of health behaviors that increase and decrease the risks of prediabetes and diabetes. The condition of metabolic inflexibility is an important topic and thoroughly explained in the past episode. Nonhsipanic black women who were fed a high-fat diet failed to shift metabolism to increase fat oxidation or decrease carbohydrate metabolism despite increases in insulin levels. This condition may contribute to a higher risk of obesity and insulin resistance. Doctor Bola Sogade and Doctor Ashwini Gore discussed these and other prevalent health issues in women’s health and gave insight into ways we can improve health outcomes for women. Thank you Dr. Gore for joining Coco Pods and sharing your expertise! #endocrinology #diabetes #hypertension #pregnancy #thryoid #pcos #womenshealth #reproductive #maternalmortality #hormones #epigenetics
