Lungs that become more precious than a pregnancy Part 2

Professor Elwing Dr. Jean Elwing is back for part two of lungs that become more precious than a pregnancy. Dr. Elwing and Dr. Sogade dive deeper into their discussion over pulmonary hypertension, pregnancy, and women’s health. This episode begins with the discussion of the duration of a hospital stay post-delivery. Dr. Elwing discusses the risks associated with labor and delivery for individuals with pulmonary hypertension. Oftentimes, women with pulmonary hypertension must stay in the hospital for an extended period after delivery. This leads to the conversation of prevalence of pulmonary hypertension. 70% of people with pulmonary hypertension are women between the ages of 30 and 50. Because of this, it is very important for women to be screened and counseled when necessary to avoid pregnancy. If a woman is pregnant with pulmonary hypertension, an early referral to a specialist is very beneficial for the health of the mother and child. The two doctors also discuss contraceptives and the difficult topic of termination of pregnancy. It is important for the doctor and patient to discuss the effects of pulmonary arterial hypertension early in the pregnancy in order for the mother to be aware of the options that are available. Dr. Elwing also shares encouraging stories and advice. She leaves listeners encouraged to speak up when their bodies don’t feel right and motivated to seek appropriate care. #womenshealth #obgyn #pulmonaryhypertension #hypertensioninwomen #pulmonaryarterialhypertension #obstetrics #pregnancy #advocacyinhealth #delivery #gynecology #contraception Timestamps (01:40) Duration of hospital stay after delivery (04:00) Causes of death during pregnancy (05:45) Prevalence of pulmonary hypertension (08:05) Avoiding pregnancy (10:10) Benefits of referrals to specialists (12:54) Should I try again after one successful pregnancy (16:00) Diagnostic tests in low resource areas (17:45) Postpartum follow up (19:25) Contraception (22:35) Pregnancy termination (24:15) Continuum of care (26:50) Summary
